Fife councillors, Bailey-Lee Robb and Stefan Hoggan-Radu, have secured full council support in their push for a national ban on disposable vapes. The councillors are concerned about the impact on young people in Fife, as disposable vapes containing lithium and copper cannot currently be recycled. The vapes are being marketed as a fun hobby, yet little is known about the health impact of vaping. A single disposable vape with approximately 600 “puffs” is equivalent to roughly 45 cigarettes. According to Cllr Robb, there has been a seven-fold increase in the use of disposable vapes among young people from 7% to 52%. The councillors filed their motion ahead of an urgent review of disposable vapes by Zero Waste Scotland.
