Time to think outside box to keep vibe in Stafford St

Timaru artist Sharon Taylor believes that Timaru residents need to start thinking outside the box to keep Stafford Street alive. She suggests pop-up art exhibitions, poetry readings, and music in empty shops as a start to bring life back into the area. Sharon is a former group manager at the Timaru District Council and was involved in the early stages of plans to reinvigorate the area. She was motivated to come forward by a recent article reporting that the council abandoned its CityTown trials. The council spent $2.1 million on the trials, which included a codebreakers game, music, craft exhibitions, and bringing buskers into the CBD.

Despite the council’s efforts, more shops have closed down in the active part of Stafford Street. In response, Sharon believes that building owners whose premises are empty should consider having their shops used for a purpose, such as exhibiting local art and music performances. The initiative would give the public an opportunity to look at different things and enjoy a regular vibe.

Timaru CBD property owners recently voted to establish a Business Improvement District (BID) to enhance and work collaboratively for the Stafford St, CBD area funded by a small levy. However, the Timaru District Council has yet to vote on the proposal. Sharon encourages everyone in Timaru to think outside the box and work together to bring life back to Stafford St.
