COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – A Lee County sheriff’s deputy was taken to the hospital Tuesday after being exposed to a chemical substance at Smiths Station High School. According to the sheriff’s office, a school staff member found a female student in distress…later learning that using a vape made her disoriented. The cardiovascular services director at Piedmont Columbus Regional says most vapes are filled with nicotine.
‘’The addiction not good and putting them in the hands of our young you know impressionable teenagers is a terrible idea but the biggest part is the long term effect of cancer Or the damage that it does to your body your lungs your heart it’s terrible.’’ said Alexis Smith
The school resource officer traced the vape to another student – who had an additional vape. But during that interaction – the deputy got sick – and gave himself Narcan before going to the hospital.
‘’ Quite frankly there’s no way of determining exactly what type of chemicals may be in these types of these types of devices so that’s something that we want to emphasize that you know it you just can’t trust a device that you have no idea what it might contain.’’ said Sheriff Jay Jones
Smoke Buddies store manager Robert Middleton says they are also making sure people aren’t coming in and purchasing vapes to give to minors.

Middleton says unfortunately vapes can be very attractive to teens…but they’re not kid-friendly.
“I got vapes right here that look like slushy cups so just to put it in perspective slushy cup vapes.’’
“Yes, they are kid friendly but they’re not built for kids so kids just shouldn’t have their hands on them just like we don’t want kids smoking cigarettes that don’t look cool for them to be smoking vapes either.” Robert Middleton says
