Vaping has long been a subject of debate, with conflicting studies and claims about its effects on human health. However, a recent study titled “Association of Smoking and E-Cigarette in Chronic Liver Disease: An NHANES Study” has been retracted, adding to the growing list of flawed vape studies.

Published in Gastroenterology Research in June 2022, the study aimed to explore the potential relationship between vaping and liver disease using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2015 to 2018. The study concluded that even occasional vaping could increase the odds of developing liver disease.

However, concerns regarding the study’s methodology, data processing, statistical analysis, and overall reliability of the conclusions were raised to the editor of the journal. The study authors were given an opportunity to address and counter these concerns, but they failed to do so. As a result, the article was formally retracted by the peer-reviewed journal.

This retraction is not an isolated incident. Numerous flawed vape studies have been published in reputable journals, distorting the scientific truth surrounding vaping. Renowned tobacco harm reduction researchers, Riccardo Polosa and Konstantinos Farsalinos, have highlighted the common flaws in studies supporting an anti-vaping narrative.

One major flaw they pointed out is the failure to consider the timing of events in determining relationships. Cross-sectional population-based studies that do not include information on the age of initiation of e-cigarette and combustible cigarette use cannot be relied upon for drawing conclusions about potentially causal associations with smoking-related diseases. Furthermore, these critical details seem to be downplayed by the editorial offices of well-known scientific journals.

In addition, a study led by Dr. Cother Hajat and Prof. Riccardo Polosa found that almost all of the 24 most frequently cited vaping studies, published in reputable medical journals, are methodologically flawed. These studies lacked clear hypothesis statements, poorly identified main outcome measures, and failed to control for confounding factors in data analysis.

The flaws were particularly evident in studies related to the Gateway Theory, which proposes that vaping serves as a gateway to smoking. These studies contained unreliable assertions, non-relevant data collection, and unfounded conclusions. Many researchers claimed to find causal associations without meaningful supporting data, leading to misleading discussions and conclusions.

With the retraction of yet another flawed study, it is crucial to critically analyze the methodology and validity of vaping research. Relying on flawed studies not only misinforms the public but also hinders the progress of scientific understanding in this field. Only through rigorous and objective research can we gain an accurate understanding of the potential risks and benefits associated with vaping.
