Viktart Mwangi: Artist Behind Colorful Murals in Nairobi CBD & Eastlands Buildings

Editor’s Review

If you live in Nairobi and frequent CBD, you must have seen the colorful mural on the Extelecoms building along Haile Selassie Avenue.

If you live in Nairobi and frequent its Central Business District (CBD), then you must have seen the colorful mural on the Extelecoms building along Haile Selassie Avenue.

Viktart Mwangi, a graduate of Fine Arts and Design from Kenyatta University, is the artist behind the mural.

Mwangi and his team were contracted to work on the mural in 2020, in what he termed as their biggest project so far.

“In 2020 my team and I were lucky to work on this incredible mural. It’s our biggest mural yet, at around 2400M². It took several months of pre-planning, two months of painting, and approximately 700L of paint to get this done,” he said.

In addition to the extelecoms house mural, Mwangi has worked on other projects such as a painting at St.Kizito Litein School for the deaf and murals in Nakuru, Kajiado, and Mombasa among others.

Walking in Nairobi’s Eastlands area, specifically around Jericho and Maringo, you are guaranteed to see at least one of his murals on the walls of houses in the areas.

For instance, in Maringo he was part of the team that came up with this mural of renowned musicians Savara and Femi One.

His amazing talent has seen him get invitations to do murals in Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania among other countries.

In 2021, he was appreciated by ex-Central Bank of Kenya Governor Patrick Njoroge for his amazing mural at St.Kizito Litein School for the deaf, which he did in collaboration with the bank.

“Then there is the superb job at St Kizito’s Litein School for the Deaf, Kericho. The walls give visual excitement and motivation to the students. What a transformation! Thank you for making a difference,” Njoroge said while sharing Litein school murals.
