Victorian Government Initiates $2 Million Anti-Vaping Program for Young People
The Victorian Government has committed $2 million to a groundbreaking initiative aimed at educating young Australians about the deep-seated dangers of vaping. This project is particularly focused on young individuals aged 14 to 25 years and is a collaborative effort led by VicHealth, in partnership with 30 local councils and the advocacy group UNCLOUD.
Empowering Youth Through Education
At the heart of this new initiative is a range of workshops and community events designed to help young people quit vaping. The program aims to harness a peer-to-peer approach by creating a digital platform where young people can connect and share authentic stories. Michelle Murray, health promotion systems executive manager at VicHealth, emphasized this approach by stating, “The best way to reach young people is through other young people.”
Partnerships with Universities
This two-year educational project will collaborate with more than five universities, including:
- University of Melbourne
- Federation University
- Monash University
- Deakin University
- Swinburn University of Technology
These institutions will help to cultivate anti-vaping advocates and provide essential education and training for staff members involved in the program.
Engagement with Sporting Communities
The initiative will also involve various sporting organizations and teams, such as:
- Swimming Victoria
- Athletics Victoria
- Hockey Club Melbourne
- Melbourne Vipers
- Deakin Melbourne Boomers
These sporting groups will actively promote the UNCLOUD website during events, youth holiday programs, and across various social media platforms, further extending the reach of the program.
Training Coaches for Effective Advocacy
As part of the initiative, the Alcohol and Drug Foundation will provide coaches at sporting clubs throughout Victoria with training focused on anti-vaping education. This will enable coaches to inform and guide young athletes concerning the perils of vaping.
Government’s Commitment to Health
Mary-Anne Thomas, the Minister for Health, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “We know the impacts of vaping has on our health, and this initiative will allow young people to learn about the risks – empowering them to make health-led decisions.” The Victorian Government is determined to equip the youth with the knowledge and tools they need to combat vaping and its associated health risks.
Future Legislative Actions
In conjunction with this initiative, the Victorian Government plans to collaborate with the Commonwealth and other states and territories to push forward a vaping reform bill. This critical legislation will restrict retail sales of vapes, thereby making them accessible solely through pharmacies. The aim is to regulate and curtail trade practices that make vaping readily available to the youth.
