Scientists Find Cannabis Compound Inside A Totally Different Plant

In a groundbreaking new study, scientists have made a remarkable finding that could revolutionize the production of a widely celebrated cannabis compound. Researchers have successfully identified cannabidiol (CBD), a compound known for its therapeutic properties, in an unexpected plant found in Brazil. This discovery opens up a range of possibilities for sourcing CBD without the legal and regulatory obstacles associated with cannabis.

The plant that contains CBD is called Trema micrantha blume, a commonly found shrub in Brazil that is often considered a weed. Molecular biologist Rodrigo Moura Neto, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, led the research team that made this remarkable discovery. They found high levels of CBD in the fruits and flowers of Trema micrantha blume, making it a potential new source of this valuable compound.

Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound responsible for the “high” associated with cannabis use, CBD has gained significant attention for its potential therapeutic effects. CBD has been explored as a treatment for various conditions, including epilepsy, chronic pain, and anxiety. Although more research is needed to fully understand its medical benefits, CBD has shown promising results.

One of the major roadblocks to CBD production and distribution is the legal status of cannabis. In many places, including Brazil, cannabis remains a controlled substance. However, the discovery of CBD in Trema micrantha blume offers a legal and commercially viable alternative for the production of this compound.

Neto spoke about the significance of this finding, stating, “This is a plant that grows all over Brazil. It would be a simpler and cheaper source of cannabidiol,” emphasizing the potential benefits of having an abundant and easily accessible plant as a source for CBD.

Interestingly, this is not the first time CBD has been found in a non-cannabis plant. Researchers in Thailand previously discovered CBD in a related plant, further substantiating the potential presence of this compound beyond the cannabis plant family.

Neto plans to expand his study to investigate the most effective methods of extracting CBD from Trema micrantha blume and assess its efficacy in treating various conditions currently treated with medical cannabis. This research endeavor has received a significant boost from the Brazilian government, as Neto’s team secured a 500,000-real (US$104,000) grant to support further exploration.

The global market for CBD has experienced substantial growth in recent years. According to a study by Vantage Market Research, the market is predicted to reach nearly US $5 billion by 2028, with projections exceeding US $47 billion. The increasing interest in health and wellness applications of CBD has been a key driving force behind this impressive market growth.

As scientists continue to unveil the untapped potential of CBD, the discovery of this compound in Trema micrantha blume marks a significant milestone. This pioneering research not only presents a legal alternative to cannabis as a CBD source but also highlights the importance of biodiversity in unlocking nature’s secrets for human well-being.
