LETTER | Pass Tobacco Product Control For Public Health Bill 2023

The Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS) is calling upon the Members of Parliament to pass the Tobacco Product Control for Public Health Bill 2023 as soon as possible. The proposed legislation includes the Generational End Game (GEG) provision and stringent regulations to tackle the issue of nicotine and drug abuse in vape products. The recent incident of a toddler suffering from acute nicotine toxicity after inhaling or swallowing vape liquid has exposed the urgent need to take decisive action to safeguard public health and well-being.

As healthcare professionals, we have a duty to advocate for patient and human safety. Our oath compels us to prioritise individual and societal welfare, ensuring that those under our care are not harmed. This principle should never be silenced, especially in the face of powerful business lobbies.

The current situation demands our unwavering commitment to do what is right, despite challenges. We believe that the Tobacco Product Control for Public Health Bill 2023, along with the GEG provision, is crucial to protect the health of Malaysians.

The proposed legislation will empower us to address the growing problem of nicotine and drug abuse in vape products, protecting vulnerable individuals from addiction and its detrimental consequences. Delaying the passage of this bill would have serious implications, prolonging the exposure of individuals to the risks associated with vape products and exacerbating the public health crisis.

The Malaysian Pharmacists Society urges MPs to table, debate, and pass the Tobacco Product Control for Public Health Bill 2023, including the GEG provision, as soon as possible. We expect every MP to fulfill their duty to protect citizens who have entrusted them with their votes during the 15th General Election.

The vulnerability of society can be measured by how we treat the weakest members. As healthcare professionals, we are dedicated to upholding this noble standard and ensuring the welfare and safety of every Malaysian. We call upon parliamentarians to emulate this spirit and champion the passage of the Tobacco Product Control for Public Health Bill 2023 and the indispensable GEG provision as a crucial step towards a healthier, safer, and more prosperous Malaysia.

The Malaysian Pharmacists Society stands ready to support and collaborate with all stakeholders to achieve this vital objective. Together, let us take swift and decisive action to protect the future of our nation, building a society where the health and well-being of our people are paramount.
