The newly appointed Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee (NC) has made a bold move by abandoning the old ZIFA offices and establishing a new base in a central business district (CBD) office. The NC was appointed by FIFA last month, following Zimbabwe’s readmission into the FIFA family. The country had previously faced a ban due to government interference in the ZIFA board. The committee, led by Lincoln Mutasa, along with Sikhumbuzo Ndebele, Rosemary Mugadza, and Nyasha Sanyamandwe, has been tasked with overseeing football operations until the next round of elections.
In an effort to break from the past and start anew, the committee has decided to distance itself from the old ZIFA offices. Instead, they have chosen a modern CBD office as their operational base. While the ZIFA secretariat remains at the association’s old offices on Livingstone Avenue, the NC has opted for a change of scenery to better carry out its responsibilities. The new CBD office is reported to be owned by businessman Shingi Mutasa, who is believed to have close ties to Lincoln Mutasa. This relocation comes at a cost, as the rental fees for the new premises are said to be quite substantial.
Despite this positive step forward, there have been reports of disunity between the NC and the ZIFA secretariat. The secretariat, feeling left out of the day-to-day operations, has voiced concerns about the committee’s decision-making process. It is essential for the NC and the secretariat to find common ground and work harmoniously to ensure the successful normalization of football affairs.
In addition to settling into their new office, the committee faces other challenges. They recently faced criticism for not confirming the participation of the Mighty Warriors in the upcoming Cosafa Cup in a timely manner. This delay has consequences for women’s football, as they will have to wait longer to reenter the international scene. The committee must learn from this mistake and work on effective communication and decision-making processes.
Looking ahead, the NC is actively searching for qualified coaches to fill vacant positions in the national teams. However, there have been concerns about the committee’s approach, with accusations of neglecting the Technical Department led by Wilson Mutekede. It is crucial for the NC to engage all relevant stakeholders and make decisions that will benefit the development of Zimbabwean football as a whole.
With the Warriors set to participate in the African Championships (CHAN) and World Cup qualifiers before the end of the year, it is imperative that the NC works diligently to ensure proper preparations.
