Op-Ed: Ward D Needs Common-Sense Regulation Of Smoke Shops

As a candidate for Jersey City’s Ward D Council seat, I’ve spent the past several months walking Central Avenue, talking with neighbors, parents, and small business owners about the changes shaping our community. One issue comes up again and again: the rapid proliferation of smoke shops – sometimes three within a single block-crowding out the businesses and spirit that make our neighborhood special. 

These aren’t just statistics. They’re stories from people who care deeply about Ward D. Maria, a mother of two, shared her worries about her children walking past a cluster of smoke shops every morning on their way to school. “It’s hard to explain to my kids why there are so many stores selling the same thing, and why they’re allowed to advertise so openly to young people,” she told me. At a recent block association meeting, Mr. Patel, a resident for over 30 years, said, “We built this neighborhood for families, not for wall-to-wall tobacco stores. It’s changing the whole feel of Central Avenue.” 

Small business owners are feeling it too. Rosa, who runs a bakery just steps from three smoke shops, has seen fewer families stopping by and worries about the message this sends to our youth. “It’s not just about competition,” she said. “It’s about what kind of neighborhood we want to be.” 

I’m running for Council because I believe Ward D deserves a representative who listens-and acts. The unchecked spread of smoke shops threatens not just our business landscape, but the health and well-being of our families. I’m committed to enacting common-sense controls on the number and placement of these stores, supporting responsible business growth, and ensuring our zoning laws reflect the needs of our community. 

As part of Joyce Watterman’s team, I promise to fight for transparency, accountability, and real solutions. Central Avenue should be a place where families feel comfortable, where small businesses thrive, and where our community’s unique spirit can shine.
