Unfortunately, many current treatments focus solely on managing symptoms rather than halting disease progression.

Current Treatments for OA

The primary management options to alleviate the effects of OA typically include:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Widely prescribed, these medications help in reducing pain and inflammation.
  • Oral joint supplements: These aim to repair or protect cartilage but often yield limited success.
  • Joint injections: Corticosteroids and newer orthobiologics are common methods but can lead to adverse side effects with prolonged use.

While these treatments can prolong functionality, they often come with risks, especially when employed over lengthy periods. Therefore, the search for alternative therapies that possess anti-inflammatory properties while minimizing side effects is ongoing.

CBD: A Potential Game-Changer?

Cannabidiol (CBD), a compound derived from Cannabis sativa, has emerged as a promising treatment option for a variety of conditions, including OA. CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it does not induce a “high,” making it a suitable alternative for equine treatment.

Research indicates that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which plays a vital role in multiple physiological processes, including:

  • Pain perception
  • Inflammation modulation
  • Mood regulation
  • Immune function

Specifically, in the context of OA, CBD has shown potential in:

The Page Laboratory is embarking on a three-phase project geared toward investigating the anti-inflammatory potential of CBD in joints. This research is pivotal in refining our understanding of OA and evaluating the effectiveness of CBD as a treatment option.

Phase One: Inducing Inflammation

The first phase involves developing a repeatable and reversible strategy to simulate inflammation in equine joints. This will be achieved by carefully dose-calibrating a pro-inflammatory compound injected into equine knees to induce temporary inflammation. Having an accurate dosage protocol is essential for experimental consistency.

Phase Two: Formulating CBD for Horses

CBD has a low bioavailability when administered to horses, with only about 10% being effectively absorbed. The objective of phase two is to devise an optimal CBD formulation for oral use. Prior research suggests that the solvent used plays a significant role in enhancing CBD absorption; therefore, formulations using fatty substances like sesame or canola oil will be explored. A balance between maximizing therapeutic impact and ensuring palatability will be a key focus.

Phase Three: Evaluating Effectiveness

In the final phase, the findings from the first two phases will be integratively assessed. Horses will be divided between a control group receiving no CBD and a treatment group that does. Key parameters, such as biomarkers associated with inflammation and assessments of lameness through a detailed objective evaluation system, will be measured. This comprehensive approach aims to meticulously analyze any differences in joint response.

Implications for Equines and Beyond

Initial research has shown that CBD could revolutionize the treatment landscape for chronic joint pain in both horses and potentially humans. Given that approximately 45% of people are likely to develop OA at some point in their lives, the results of this equine study may extend beyond veterinary medicine into broader healthcare applications.

The culmination of this research is aimed at not only refining a model for joint inflammation but also assessing CBD’s role in the management of joint pain in horses. Such advances could redefine treatment standards and improve the quality of life for affected animals.
