CBD Product Quality Still Lacking In UK
The quality of CBD products in the UK continues to be a cause for concern. Despite increased regulatory oversight in recent years, a new study has revealed significant discrepancies between the advertised and actual CBD content in cannabidiol-containing products.
Researchers conducted a study to determine the CBD concentrations in various CBD products such as aqueous tinctures, oils, e-liquids, and drinks. The products were purchased online in the UK. The analysis found that very few products had CBD concentrations within 10% of the advertised concentrations, with most products falling below the stated levels. Only 8% of the tested products had measured concentrations within the 10% range. Oils were found to deviate the least from the advertised CBD content among the four categories tested.
These findings raise concerns about the manufacturing standards of CBD products and suggest that CBD may degrade in consumer products. The study also highlighted the need for improved regulation of CBD-containing consumer products to ensure their quality.
The researchers also noted that CBD in e-liquids can degrade by 15-20% over 30 days when exposed to natural light or constant temperatures of 37°C. Additionally, CBD appears to be more unstable when dissolved in water compared to oils.
This study, conducted by researchers from Loughborough University and Bridge Farm Group, emphasizes the broader range of CBD products assessed compared to previous studies in the UK. It adds to the body of evidence highlighting the ongoing issue of poor quality control in CBD products sold in the UK.
This is not the first time that concerns have been raised about the quality of CBD products in the country. A study conducted in 2019 found that only 38% of tested products had CBD concentrations within 10% of the advertised content. Furthermore, THC or CBN were detected in 45% of the products, and contaminants like dichloromethane were found in a significant proportion.
In an effort to address these concerns, the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) published a final list of CBD products that can be marketed in England and Wales. This list currently includes over 12,000 products that have met the FSA’s standards. It is unclear whether any of the products tested in this recent study are included on the FSA list.
Overall, the study underscores the ongoing issue of poor CBD product quality in the UK. It is essential for regulators and manufacturers to work together to improve the manufacturing standards and regulation of CBD products to ensure consumers can access high-quality and accurately labeled products.
