Is 2021 the year that you’ll stop smoking for good? Perhaps you’ve tried going cold turkey before and don’t have the willpower?

How to quit smoking

1. Set a realistic goal

Much like anything else, giving up smoking isn’t easy. You may find that you’re more moody and irritable because you’re not getting your nicotine fix. Or maybe you’re overcompensating and binge eating to replace smoke breaks. The trick here is to be realistic. If you smoked 20 cigarettes a day, you need to cut back gradually. 2. Keep active

We all know that exercise is good for us in more ways than one. It improves cardiovascular fitness levels and creates endorphins which instantly boost your mood. But doing at least 30 minutes of exercise each day can help to overcome cigarette cravings too. So, where you would usually go outside for a cigarette, consider going for a short walk or don a pair of trainers and go for a jog instead.

3. Maintain a balanced diet 

There will be times where you could murder a cigarette, say if you’re used to having one with your morning cup of coffee, on your walk to work or when you’re feeling particularly stressed. Whilst it’s important that you don’t make too many resolutions at once, finding something to take your mind off things can really help – especially if you’ve smoked virtually all of your life!

A great way to reduce that dreading feeling of withdrawal is to ensure you’re giving your body the nutrients it needs – without going over the recommended daily calorie intake. Aim to eat carbs, proteins, fats, fibre and fats in moderation. It’s also a good idea to take vitamins and minerals, not to mention drink plenty of water.

4. Switch to vaping
