Rural Queensland Farm Raid Sparks $23.1m Cannabis Bust

A recent bust by police in rural Queensland has led to the seizure of over $20 million worth of cannabis. The plants were found growing inside of 19 greenhouses, measuring 70 meters long, at a property in Coominya. In addition, over 1,600 cannabis seedlings and more than 32 kilograms of dried cannabis were found in a house and a shipping container. The street value of the overall haul was estimated to be $23.1m.

A 26-year-old man was arrested outside of the property on 15th May and later charged with producing a commercial quantity of cannabis. The police are still searching for others allegedly involved. This bust is linked to an alleged national drug syndicate, which is scouting and purchasing isolated farms in rural Queensland to grow cannabis on a large scale as part of their nationwide operation.

It is believed that this syndicate has been facilitating the commercial production and distribution of cannabis across Queensland, Victoria, NSW and the Northern Territory. The Queensland police are working alongside other jurisdictions to dismantle the entire group, with 12 similarly sized cannabis farms already dismantled.

It is important to remember that the production of cannabis, especially hydroponic cannabis, is a cyclic process which means that the same site can produce up to three or four crops in a year. Therefore, this raid is a significant disruption to the drug syndicate’s operations.

If you have any information regarding this or any other drug-related operations, you can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
