Nottinghm Cannabis Growers Will Be Deported To Vietnam

Three people who were acting as gardeners to a cannabis crop in Gardendale Avenue, Clifton have been caught and jailed; they will eventually be deported from the UK. The plants were discovered on March 14 after a member of the public reported the possibility of criminal activity at the address. Those arrested were Hieu-Van Duong (aged 37), of no fixed abode, Luc Van Nguyen (aged 36), of no fixed abode and Van Duc Ungiyen (aged 43), of Gardendale Avenue, Clifton. All three of them have admitted producing cannabis in court. Ungiyen was sentenced to serve 14 months in prison, and the other two co-accused each received 12 months, of which they will serve half before deportation.

Judge Stuart Rafferty KC said to the three men at Nottingham Crown Court, on Thursday (May 11): “No doubt each of you came to this country thinking that your lives would be better and no doubt each of you paid a large sum of money to get here via one route or another. Inevitably coming to this country illegally meant that you could not work in a proper way. And, inevitably, those who had brought you have wanted the money for doing so, and so inevitably you begin to work as gardeners in a cannabis grow.”

The judge warned that the Vietnamese could regain the ground that has been lost in recent years by Lithuanians in growing cannabis in this country. “Many people think the streets of this country are paved with gold,” he said. “Nothing could be further from the truth.” He also warned that once they get back to Vietnam and they have still not paid their debt, somebody could put them back in a trailer and smuggle them back into the country again. So far from improving their lives, they have made them many, many times worse.

Life for Vietnamese in the UK

Many Vietnamese citizens come to the UK with the expectation that their lives will be better, but coming illegally means they cannot work properly. Gardening for cannabis growers has become, for many, the only way to earn money. Unfortunately, it is illegal and carries severe punishment. Hopefully, this will be a lesson learnt for everyone who is hoping to come to the UK to find a better life.
